Although the Netherlands is better known as a country of bicyclists (with over 22 million bikes owned by its 17.9 million residents), Dutch people do buy cars as well. The number of new cars registered in 2024 grew by 3.1% compared with 2023 (381,227 vs. 369,791).
Looking at the most popular engine types sold in 2024, over 76% were either fully electric or hybrid, while just under 22% were petrol.
TOP 10 CAR BRANDS IN HOLLAND
#1 – KIA 34,841 units (9.1%)
- The South Korean car brand reclaimed the top spot (which it had managed to achieve for the very first time in 2022), with a 9.1% market share (based on number of vehicles sold). This was a 4.0% increase on its 2023 unit sales. The brand’s best selling models were the ‘Niro‘ and ‘Picanto‘
#2 – VOLVO 30,955 units (8.1%)
- The biggest surprise in the rankings was the jump of Volvo up to the number 2 position, selling 30,955 cars in Netherlands in 2024 for an 8.1% market share. The brand ranked #10 a year earlier with just a 4.4% market share. Volvo’s top models in Netherlands are the ‘EX30‘ and the ‘XC40‘.
#3 – TOYOTA 30,739 units (8.1%)
- Toyota retained its position as the third best selling car brand in Netherlands for 2024 with 30,739 vehicles sold and an 8.1% market share (up from 6.6% in 2023). Toyota had two models among the 10 best selling car models in Netherlands for 2024 – ‘Aygo X‘ at #6 and ‘Yaris Cross‘ at #10.
#4 – TESLA 30,006 units (7.9%)
- Tesla enjoyed a successful year in Netherlands in 2024 with its market share rising to 7.9% from 5.2% in 2023. This made it the fourth best selling car brand in the country, driven by sales of its ‘Model Y‘ and ‘Model 3‘, which were both among the top 5 best selling car models in Netherlands for the year. Tesla has 12 showrooms in Netherlands.
#5 – VOLKSWAGEN 26,989 units (7.1%)
- The German auto maker which had sat atop the ranking of best selling car brands in Netherlands for so long dropped to number 5 in 2024. It sold 8,000 fewer cars compared to 2023 which reduced its market share to 7.1% from 9.5%. The brand only scored one model among the top 10 in Netherlands for 2024 – the VW ‘Polo‘ at #9.
#6 – SKODA 21,535 units (5.6%)
- Volkswagen’s sister car brand Skoda dropped one notch in the rankings to sixth place among the top car brands in Netherlands despite selling 1,000 units more in 2024 than 2023. It had no models among the top 10 in the Dutch market.
#7 – BMW 21,327 units (5.6%)
- Premium German car brand BMW maintained its 5.6% market share in Netherlands for 2024, but its ranking slipped to seventh from fourth a year earlier.
#8 – HYUNDAI 19,213 units (5.0%)
- The Korean brand moved up to number 8 from number 9 a year earlier despite its market share dropping from 5.1% to 5.0%. It did have one model among the 10 best selling car models in Netherlands for 2024 – the ‘Kona‘ at #7.
#9 – RENAULT 18,774 units (4.9%)
- French car brand Renault had a tough year in Netherlands during 2024. It sold 1600 fewer vehicles than it did in 2023 and saw its market share dip from 5.5% to 4.9%. Its ranking sank from #6 to #9 for the year. Renault did not have any models among the top 10 in Netherlands for 2024.
#10 – PEUGEOT 15,819 units (4.1%)
- Peugeot also had a difficult 2024 in Netherlands selling 4,000 less units than in 2023, seeing its market share drop from 5.2% to 4.1%. Its ranking dropped from #6 to #10 and it did not have a model among the top 10 in Netherlands for the first time in several.
