ABOUT THE DUTCH BEAUTY INDUSTRY
The Netherlands beauty industry is not government regulated which means anyone can open a beauty or hair salon in Holland even if they have no experience. Professional organizations such as ANBOS offer training programs and certification for qualified beauticians. To be a member, ANBOS requires completion of a structured beauty education program. A salon will typically display its ANBOS logo on a front door or window. Expats should look for this logo when visiting a schoonheidssalon (beauty salon) for the first time to ensure they will receive a reasonable level of service.
The hair cutting industry in Netherlands, like beauty, is not government-regulated. A degree or certification is not legally required for a person to call themselves a kapper (hair cutter) or to open a kapsalon (hair salon). This has given rise to professional associations such as ANKO (Algemene Nederlandse Kappersorganisatie) where membership is only granted if the applicant has completed a professional haircutting training program. A member can then display the ANKO logo or certificate in their salon. Expats in Netherlands should look for the ANKO logo when visiting a haircutter for the first time.
