FURNITURE SHOPPING IN HOLLAND

Expats shopping for furniture in the Netherlands should be aware that small, independent stores generally sell merchandise (sofas, tables, wall cabinets) that is made-to-order rather than available from warehouse inventory. The benefit of buying from such a seller is that you get to customize items to your own taste, such as the upholstery material (fabric, color, print) and wood finish. The delivery lead time for such orders is commonly 4-6 weeks.

Lower-priced furniture retailers on the other hand, almost always are selling merchandise that is in stock. These retailers would include furniture webshops (e.g. Home24, fonQ), chain stores (e.g. Beter Bed, Woonexpress) and flat-pack specialists (e.g. Ikea, JYSK, Leen Bakker).  

With the exception of flat-pack retailers, furniture and bed stores in the Netherlands will arrange delivery. It is sometimes possible to have the delivery service take away the old item being replaced if it is large and bulky, such as a sofa or mattress. If such a service is offered by the company and desired by the customer, it needs to be set when delivery arrangements are made. An additional fee is generally charged for this take away service.

FURNITURE RENTAL COMPANIES

The concept of furniture rental is not widespread in the Netherlands. A few companies have started offering a leasing service but it is generally limited to a few key categories. Lease je Meubels, for example, offers beds and sofas. Beter Bed, one of the largest bed store chains in the Netherlands, now has a bed leasing option while Dutch mattress brand Swiss Sense launched its Club 9 mattress subscription service.

A furniture lease contract commonly includes free moving service for leased items if you move house within the Netherlands during the contract term.

It should be noted that the term for most furniture leasing in the Netherlands is 5 years. If your planned stay in the Netherlands is likely to be shorter than this, furniture leasing is not a viable option.
