About taxi service in the Netherlands…
Taxi service is available in all major cities in Holland. Independent taxi drivers often register with a large regional taxi provider. Such relationships are usually exclusive with the driver providing service in his own vehicle on agreed upon days/times. Both the company and the driver share revenue. The driver can operate independently all other times.
Taxis are not hailed randomly on the street in Holland. Rather, a pickup request can be made to a taxi company (by phone or app) or, in the case of larger cities, there are taxi stands with available taxis waiting. For example, in The Hague city center there is a taxi stand outside the the Binnenhof (Dutch Parliament building). In the Amsterdam city center, there are several taxi stand locations.
Other places taxis can be found waiting is outside large hotels and busy Dutch train stations.
Ride-sharing company Uber operates in the Netherlands; it divides the country into 2 regions:
- Amsterdam (which includes the northern cities of Alkmaar, Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Arnhem, Groningen, Haarlem, Leeuwarden, Nijmegen, Utrecht and Zwolle)
- Southern Netherlands (which includes the lower half and cities such as Breda, Delft, Eindhoven, The Hague, Leiden, Maastricht, Middelburg, Rotterdam and Tilburg).
