10 BIGGEST CAR BRANDS IN HOLLAND
#1 – Volkswagen: the German company currently holds 11% of the market share for new automobiles sold in the Netherlands, making it the largest car brand. Worldwide, Volkswagen is the 3rd largest car manufacturer.
#2 – Renault: As with Volkswagen, Renault also benefits from its home country (France) being just a short distance from the Netherlands. Renault currently holds 8.4% of the Dutch car market, good enough to be the second biggest car maker in the country which is significantly higher than its worldwide rank as the 11th largest car maker.
#3 – Opel: American expats newly arriving in Holland are often surprised to see the many ‘Opel’ brand vehicles on Dutch roads. That is until they learn that Opel is a subsidiary of General Motors, the largest American car maker (second biggest in the world). Opel currently owns an 8.1% share of the car market in the Netherlands.
#4 – Peugoet: Like Opel, this French car maker also holds 8.1% of the Dutch car market, making it the fourth largest automobile brand in Holland. It also means the Peugoet brand is exceptionally well penetrated in the Netherlands in comparison to its global performance, where Groupe PSA (Peugoet Citroen) only comes in at number ten of the largest car makers.
#5 – Ford: America’s second largest car maker is Holland’s fifth largest car brand, which corresponds to Ford’s global ranking as the fifth largest car maker. Here in the Netherlands it owns a 5.9% share of the car market.
#6 – Kia: Kia is the second largest car brand in South Korea behind Hyundai (owned by the same parent company). Combined they rank as the world’s fourth largest car maker. In the Netherlands, Kia (not including Hyundai) owns a 5.2% share of the market placing it at number six.
#7 – BMW: Once again, proximity to a brand’s home country plays a key role. The German car maker owns nearly 5% of the Dutch automobile market, which makes it the seventh biggest car brand, significantly higher than its worldwide ranking of number 12.
#8 – Nissan: The second largest car maker in Japan is actually the number one Japanese car brand in the Netherlands with a 3.6% share.
#9 – Mercedes: The luxury car maker (and third German brand among the top ten) has a 3.5% share of the car market in the Netherlands, making it the 9th largest.
#10 – Volvo: The Swedish car brand (now owned by the Chinese vehicle manufacturer Geely), has a 3.5% share of the Dutch car market, making it the tenth best selling brand in Holland, which is exceptional when you compare that to its global rank in 20th place among the largest car makers.
