Here are ten common early-Spring blooming Dutch flowers in Holland. You might come across these sprouting in bulb fields, spreading their petals in protective glass houses or wrapped in cellophane, sitting near the checkout stand of your local supermarket…
CROCUS: Usually the first to pop its head out of the ground, this mini tulip-like bloom can be found in a range of colors just about everywhere in South Holland from late February to early April.
TURKISH GLORY OF THE SNOW: Another early Spring bloomer, this short mini daisy-like flower provides the purplish-blue hew found in many a Dutch garden during the March-April time frame.
DAFFODILS: These sunny yellow (or white) flowers are prolific in Holland from early March to mid-April, giving us ample warning that Holland’s most popular flower, the tulip, will be arriving soon.
MUSCARI: These bluish-purple stalk-like flowers do indeed look like mini grape clusters up close. Seeing them in bloom from late February to early April mean the real hyacinths aren’t far behind.
ANEMONE: Classic daisy-like flowers found in a range of colors, including cornflower blue (shown), white and fuschia.
TULIPS: We all know the Dutch have green thumbs when it comes to growing tulips in Holland. From early April to mid-May, their vibrant colours are on display everywhere, blooming in the fields of the Dune & Bulb region, planted in huge stone pots located in most South Holland city centers like The Hague, Delft and Rotterdam, and attractively displayed in tall vases sitting on coffee tables or window sills in many a Dutch home.
HYACINTHS: Not only do these stalks of mini flowers rival tulips in visual appeal when in full bloom, but they easily surpass tulips when it comes to fragrance. But don’t just take our word for it. This Spring grab your bike and take a ride through the Dune and Bulb region, from Voorhout to Sassenheim and you’ll know what we mean.
FRITILLARIA: These bell-shaped, upside down hanging ornamental flowers can be found blooming around Holland in March/April.
GERANIUMS: Colourful ground cover wildflowers are a common sight in Holland through much of the Spring season.
AMARYLLIS: These colourful two-toned flowers can’t be missed with their dramatic presence.
