NETHERLANDS FURNITURE SHOPPING
Expats shopping for furniture in the Netherlands should be aware that small, independent stores generally sell merchandise (sofas, tables, wall cabinets) that is made-to-order rather than available from warehouse inventory. The benefit of buying from such a seller is that you get to customize items to your own taste, such as the upholstery material (fabric, color, print) and wood finish. Delivery lead time on such orders is commonly 4-6 weeks.
Lower-priced furniture retailers on the other hand, generally sell stocked merchandise. These include furniture webshops (e.g. fonQ and vtwonen), chain stores (e.g. Beter Bed, Woonenzo) and flat-pack specialists (e.g. Ikea, JYSK, Leen Bakker). If there is a lead time, it will be included with the product description on the website.
Furniture and bed stores in Netherlands will arrange delivery of large items such as beds/mattresses and sofas. It is often possible to have the delivery company take away the old item being replaced. This removal service would be arranged in advance of the delivery and may involve a small fee.
DUTCH FURNITURE RENTAL COMPANIES
Furniture rental is possible but not common in the Netherlands. A fairly new trend is the leasing of a bed/mattress as these are typically high-ticket items. Beter Bed, one of the largest bed store chains in the country, has a bed leasing program as does Dutch mattress brand Swiss Sense with its Club9 Sleepservice mattress-subscription service.
It should be noted that the contract term for bed/mattress leases is typically 5 years. If your stay in the Netherlands is not planned to be that long, leasing is unlikely to be a viable option.
DUTCH BED SIZES
