Netherlands Top 10 Films of 2019
Here’s a look back to the ten biggest movies of 2019 at the Dutch box office, plus the #1 film each year in the Netherlands during the last decade (2010-2019)…
2019 was a record-setting year at the Netherlands box office as receipts climbed to €315.4 million, a 2.9% increase over 2018 which was previously the best year for Dutch cinemas. For the first time, five films earned €10.0 million or more during the calendar year; quite a turnaround from 2013 when the number one film that year didn’t even earn that amount.
There are few big surprises in the top 10 movies at the Dutch box office for 2019, with most being the same as those which topped the global box office. One exception would be Toy Story 4 which under-performed here in Holland (2019 rank #16) in comparison to both the U.S.A. (2019 rank #3) and worldwide (2019 rank #6). In contrast, Once Upon A Time…in Hollywood over-performed here (2019 rank #7) compared to the U.S.A. (2019 rank #18) and worldwide (2019 rank #23).
Another point which deserves mention is how well the film Bohemian Rhapsody resonated with Dutch movie-goers. Not only did it rank as the #1 film in Holland for 2018 (with €14.5 million in receipts), it also placed #5 in 2019 due to an additional €10 million earned at the start of last year.
