NOTES ON MOVING TO/FROM OR WITHIN HOLLAND
Expats planning a move to Holland should be aware that Dutch living spaces are typically small, especially when it comes to older apartments and homes. Take this into consideration before having large pieces of furniture shipped.
Local movers frequently use mechanical lifts to transport items from street level to higher floor apartments as this tends to be a more efficient way to work especially in buildings with narrow staircases or small elevators. When the lift reaches the top, the items are taken into the apartment through a window.
A mechanical lift can sometimes be hired from a mover even if you are not using that company’s full moving services. The company provides the lift and operator and rentals are generally available in full and half day increments. Mechanical lifts typically have a maximum extended range 6-8 stories.
Moving from the Netherlands to a destination outside the European Union? Then the local Dutch moving company will complete the required customs documents and pass them to the freight forwarder with the shipment (whether that be at a seaport, airport or other departure point). Dutch moving companies that handle overseas removals generally coordinate with an international partner firm located in the destination country. The partner company is provided with all the relevant shipment information so they can collect it when it arrives and deliver it to your new residence.
It is important to verify that the moving company is insured for shipments and that your goods will be fully covered in the event of loss or damage.
