Holland is renown around the world as the land of tulips and rightly so considering over a billion bulbs are cultivated a year. Most are exported to other countries, both within and outside the European Union. With advancements in technology used to extend the life of perishables, fresh cut Holland tulips are now sold in such faraway lands as Japan, China and Australia.
Tulips grown outdoors start blooming in mid-March, peak in April and then begin to fade through May. Some tulip varieties bloom earlier in spring when temperatures are still relatively cold, while others prefer the more moderate conditions that come later in the tulip season.

Darwin Hybrid Tulips: Large, mid-season blooming flowers on tall strong stems.

Double Tulips: These Holland tulips can be either early-blooming or late-blooming.

Fosteriana Tulips: Sculpted-silhouette flowers that bloom early in the tulip season.

Fringed (Crispa) Tulips: Late-blooming flowers that are easily identified by frayed petal edges.

Greigii Tulips: Early-blooming flowers on shorter stems with pointed petals.


Single Tulips: This classic beauty comes in both early and late-blooming varieties.


Lily-Flowering Tulips: Late-blooming flowers characterized by their pointed petals and long stems.

Viridiflora Tulips: Late-blooming flowers and the only tulip variety with green in their petals.
