HOTEL RATINGS IN THE NETHERLANDS
It was more than 60 years ago (1958), that Forbes Travel Guide (formerly called Mobil Travel Guide) became one of the very first travel-related businesses to introduce a star-rating system in reference to a hotel quality. Such rating systems are widely used today, not just by private travel-related companies, but by national tourism boards.
Here in the Netherlands, the DHC (Dutch Hotel Classification) was formerly the organization that assigned quality star ratings to hotels. Today this activity is handled by the Koninklijke Horeca Nederlands (KHN), through the HotelSterren.nl platform.
The quality of accommodations are graded on a scale of 1-5 stars based on these criteria. Although the star-rating is optional in the Netherlands, the vast majority of hotels participate in the program.

As of 2024, there are 38 hotels in the Netherlands with a 5-star rating. Only Amsterdam (18), Maastricht (2) and the island of Texel (3) have more than one 5-star hotel.
